The Sea Gardener in Primary Schools
We work with schools to provide workshops on Plants & Animals, Environmental Awareness, Science & the Environment and Caring for the environment.
Using the Rocky Shore habitat, we encourage pupils to investigate and explore the natural world, to think and work scientifically and to make models to enhance understanding of the relationships between species and environment.
There is a range of options, depending on school location etc.:
Fieldwork – where we work with pupils in situ at a rocky shore (suitable for older pupils). Observe the plants and animals, investigate patterns of movement, understand the inter-relationships and develop a logical framework for studying a habitat.
Classroom-based – where we bring the rocky shore to the classroom in a practical engaging way (especially suitable for younger pupils ). Plants and images of animal life are coupled with experiential approaches, such as making a seaweed bath gel.
Model-making in the classroom for older pupils can follow a field trip to reinforce learning. The patterns of zonation in the rocky shore habitat lend themselves well to this type of activity
We also provide workshops on the subject of nutrition and food.

The Sea Gardener in Secondary Schools
Marie is a member of the Heritage in Schools Panel. She will come to your school or work in the field with your classes, to teach curriculum ecology modules. We also provide workshops on the subject of nutrition and food. For example, a seaweed forage, followed by a short cookery demonstration and talk on nutrition has worked well with TYO groups.
