Some seaweeds exude a gel when heated (e.g. wracks, carrageen) and this gel has been found to benefit the skin greatly, as a moisturiser, rejuvenator and detoxifier and as a soother for tired muscles and stiff joints. This was recognised over a century ago and seaweed baths sprang up all round the coast and were part of the health treatments for Victorian visitors. They declined in the 60’s and 70’s, but are now undergoing a resurgence in places like Solas na Mara in An Rinn, Co.Waterford. The Sea Gardener now supplies Seaweed Bath Packs for home use to local hotels and spas, and on request.
